Energy efficiency to continue growing in the country

To Petrobras, energy efficiency is what drives the company's exploration, production, and distribution operations. Operating in several fields of production, our goal is to be in constant pursuit of alternative sources of energy, always with sustainability and efficiency in mind.

Learn more about our operations in Japan:

  • Refinery

We operate in refining via the Nansei Sekiyu refinery (NSS). Acquired in April 2008, in partnership with the Sumitomo Corporation, the refinery has a refining capacity of 100,000 barrels per day and is the only one in a 700 km radius. In 2010, with the departure of the Japanese group, Petrobras went on to hold 100% stakes in the NSS.

  • Terminals

Chosen for being a strategic trade point, the island of Okinawa is about a thousand kilometers off the southeastern coast of China and the heart of Japan – a region where cities like Shanghai, Tokyo, and Seoul are located.

  • Ethanol

With Mitsui & Co. we signed a partnership, in 2008, to undertake projects related to bioenergy, mainly ethanol, and to power generation from sugarcane bagasse. With the Itochu Corporation, an agreement was signed by Petrobras, the government of Pernambuco, and the Japanese company for cane sugar production.
