Expanding the Limits

Doing things well is not enough. We want to do more and better. Expanding the frontiers of knowledge in order to improve the company's performance in each area is part of our culture.

Be it in exploration and production in deep waters or in refining oil, Petrobras is not content with the excellence it has already achieved. If we were already producing oil at a depth of 1,800 meters from the waterline, why not go even further and develop technology to surpass that mark, reaching 3,000 meters? If we were already producing oil above the salt layer, why not cut through this layer in search of an oil that hitherto had been impossible to produce?

The same goes for the fields where productivity is starting to decline: how to efficiently extract the oil that remains trapped in these fields which are considered as mature after years of production? Expanding the limits of our conventional business also involves the transportation of natural gas on vessels, the maximization of the most noble products in oil refining, and excellence in the processes of producing petrochemicals.

A pursuit for improvements in the current processes and for new challenges: this is the mentality that guides the work of our researchers.

Depth record in the Exploration

Post-Salt Layer
Bears most of Brazil's reserves.
Salt Layer
Irregular layer whose thickness ranges from 1.000 to 2.000 meters.
Pre-Salt Layer
On account of its geological characteristics, the pre-salt marks the beginning of a new exploratory model, one that will involve the use of technology that is more resistant both to corrosion and to high temperatures and pressure.
